What is the difference between AEO, GEO & AIO ?
In a nutshell, AEO is getting your business understood & featured by AI in queries. GEO is getting your business recommended by AI. AIO is making sure AI engines know your business exists for discovery.
Overview
The search landscape has dramatically changed over the last 2 years or so with the advent of an ever growing array of AI engines.
AI search now demands organized, well-structured, detailed and factual information from trusted sources that’s consistent across your brand’s footprint. But wait a minute. Isn’t this what SEO was always about? Yes, but we have now entered an answer-first era where traditional search results – the traditional 10 blue links – are being served below AI overviews and citations.
At first, these new terms may sound confusing and ‘invented’ by digital marketing professionals. But, there’s now a concensus of sorts in the digital marketing world about each of these terms.
In this article, we breakdown these new search terms AEO, GEO & AIO from a lay man’s perspective, and explain why it’s important to track, enable and pursue these disciplines for visibility.
What is AEO?
AEO or answer engine optimization is the discipline of making it effortless for AI engines and LLMs to cite your words in their answers to queries. It involves answering the exact questions people are asking.
Consequently, it becomes important to know if your information is being served up as an answer in response to a question posted. These questions that are routinely asked can be repurposed into blog articles, videos, faqs and help sections as an AEO strategy. The more questions that get answered, the better, because LLM’s tend to pull answers from the loudest brands – those brands that get mentioned the most. The LLM’s job is to extract accurate answers from trusted sources.
But AEO is not just about websites. It is also about the answers being found consistently across your brand’s footprint. This means replication across social channels, forums, blogs, help sections and in citations. Basically everything that reinforces your brand’s authority in relation to the question being answered. That sums up AEO or answer engine optimization.
What is GEO?
GEO or generative engine optimization is the discipline of optimizing content to get chosen by AI. GEO changes the paradigm shift from being ‘the answer’ to being ‘the recommendation’.
It involves creating content to put your brand smack into the conversation. Think comparison tables, decision-making guides, unique insights, faqs, presenting accurate pros and cons, comprehensive, in-depth pages, case studies, statistics and facts, and reviews. But presenting all of it in a simple, lucid and readable format with short sentences.
GEO involves creating well differentiated, well-presented and well-structured content that AI models can crawl and mention during real time queries.
What is AIO?
AIO is the discipline of ensuring AI engines know that your brand exist out there. It is to ensure that your brand is visible and understandable by LLMs.
AIO is, therefore, your brand’s entire digital footprint across the internet. This includes your website, your local business profile, your NAP (name, address, phone number) consistency, your reviews, your PR etc.
AIO involves having structured technical data (accurate schema markups), and strong authority signals like reviews (Google, Yelp, Clutch, etc), brand recognition and awards, news mentions, mentions in directories, blogs, podcasts, community forums etc. Basically every knowledge signal that reinforces the popularity and trustworthiness of your brand so that AI can cite you.
Isn't it all just SEO?
AEO, GEO and AIO all have overlaps with SEO. They are an evolved form of SEO with a wider scope. Good SEO is still the foundation of all of them.
A lot of what holds true for traditional SEO is still as important now as before. E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) is as relevant, if not more, today than it ever was.
GEO is an evolved form of on-site SEO: structured content marketing that targets citations, brand mentions and recommendations as opposed to just keyword rankings.
AEO is answer-focused on-site optimization.
AIO involves aspects of on-site technical SEO and off-site brand building.
This also means that tried and tested old-school techniques like creating helpful, informative content that actually helps people decide, and a thorough technical setup to help AI understand and cite your brand remain important today.
In one of our earlier articles, we briefly touched upon SEO’s relevance in the age of AI. A lot of it still holds true. AI just presents a new layer that’s built on the very same fundamentals.
Ignoring AEO, GEO & AIO presents the unique risk of losing out to a whole new channel of discovery by AI.
Your brand may have vanity keyword rankings inside the top 10 traditional search result listings, but you may be already losing out to the competition that has optimized for AI.
The biggest risk to brands today is becoming invisible to AI.
In Summary
- AEO ensures your brand answers user questions directly
- GEO ensures your brand gets recommended & cited as a trusted authority.
- AIO ensures your brand’s footprint is consistent across the digital world & technically readable by AI engines.
- Good SEO forms the foundation upon which AEO, GEO & AIO are built upon.
- Ignoring AEO, GEO & AIO can risk being invisible in an answer-first, AI-first search environment.
